Azalea, Royal

Deciduous species. Compact and slow growing, forming an upright globe with many stout stems. Large light pink flowers with brown-dotted throats in early May. Young foliage bronze, changing to green in summer and yellow to orange in fall. Considered by many connoisseurs to be one of the finest azaleas for New England. Seems to do better than other ericaceous plants on high pH soils, pH 6.5 to 7 being acceptable. May have a higher calcium requirement than other types. PP -- This cultivar or species has been selected as a "Proven Performer" by the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society and performs consistently well in USDA Zones 5 and 6 Massachusetts landscapes.
