<< Previous Plant  |   Next Plant >>

Hollyhock

Velvety maroon-black single flowers in mid summer. Biennial. Will perennialize in a location it likes. Performs best in moist, well drained soils and full sun. An old fashioned favorite in New England, adaptable to coastal conditions. Alcea are occasionally attacked by powdery mildew or rusts. Avoid problems by maintaining foo air circulation through proper spacing and, if necessary, by staking. Water from below. If needed, a fungicide may be applied early while any problem is still controllable. Spacing: 2-3 ft.
