Hollyhock, Black

Tall spires of large blossoms of a unique single maroon-black that open from bottom to top, July-August. Performs best in moist, well drained soils and full sun. An old fashioned favorite in New England, adaptable to coastal conditions. Will perennialize in a location it likes. Alceas are occasionally attacked by powdery mildew or rusts. Avoid problems by maintaining good air circulation through proper spacing and, if necessary, by staking. Water from below. If needed, a fungicide may be applied. Reliably perennial and will self-sow. Spacing: 15–18".
