Soft, curved, heavy-textured deep blue needles wrap the stems. Many cones. Firs are generally well adapted to New England. They prefer acidic but moist well drained soils and benefit from cooler temperatures. Relatively intolerant of air pollution, they are not well suited to city conditions with the exception of A. concolor.
