<< Previous Plant | Next Plant >> Holly, Japanese Dense, compact globe. Small, deep green leaves. Excellent texture. Grows to 6'-8' tall, equal or greater spread. Like many other broad-leaved evergreen shrubs, it prefers acid soils and will develop iron deficiency if the pH is too high. This species has been commonly used for landscaping in this region for many decades, most successfully in USDA zone 6 and warmer. Japanese holly can be grown in sun or part shade but winter injury in northern climates may be more severe on plants receiving unrelenting winter sun. When properly sited it makes an attractive hedge, foundation plant, and even a small tree if left to grow naturally. Winter protection from full sun and wind is recommended. Mulching around the root area is helpful to moderate temperature fluctuations. Foliage damaged by winter winds generally rejuvenates by mid spring, unless the roots have been damaged. Grown for its distinctive form and foliage; berries inconsequential. Adaptable to seashore conditions. Full sun to part shade.
